Graded Motor Imagery (GMI)

Graded Motor Imagery is an innovative rehabilitation therapy used to treat complex pain conditions and improve motor function. It's primarily used for chronic pain, back pain, phantom limb pain, and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

Chronic pain can significantly impact a person's ability to move and function normally, often leading to a fear of movement that further exacerbates the condition. When traditional therapies fall short in addressing these complex pain-movement relationships, Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) offers a valuable alternative.

GMI is an innovative rehabilitation approach used to treat complex pain conditions and improve motor function. It's primarily used for chronic pain, back pain, phantom limb pain, and conditions like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). By gradually retraining the brain's perception and processing of movement, GMI can help break the pain-fear-avoidance cycle and improve overall function.

How GMI Works

GMI uses a three-stage process to gradually retrain the brain's perception of the affected body part:

  1. Left/Right Discrimination
The first stage involves identifying left or right images of the affected body part, helping to activate motor cortex networks.
  2. Imagined Movements
In this stage, patients mentally rehearse movements without actually performing them, further engaging motor planning areas of the brain.
  3. Mirror Therapy
The final stage uses mirrors to create a visual illusion of normal movement in the affected limb, helping to normalise brain responses to movement.

Evidence and Effects

Research has shown GMI to be effective in reducing pain and improving function in various conditions. Studies have reported significant pain reduction and increased mobility in patients with CRPS and phantom limb pain.

Benefits of GMI

  • Reduced pain intensity
  • Improved motor function
  • Enhanced body perception
  • Non-invasive treatment option
  • Potential for long-term pain management
