The complete suite of tailored therapies

Specialist Pain Medicine

Our pain specialists offer comprehensive care for complex headache disorders, migraines, and TMD. Using advanced diagnostic techniques, they identify underlying causes and develop tailored treatment plans. These may include innovative pain management strategies, targeted interventions, and interdisciplinary approaches to provide relief and improve quality of life for patients with persistent or severe head and facial pain.

Orofacial Pain Therapy

Our orofacial pain practitioner, Raelene Clark, specialises in diagnosing and treating TMD and related facial pain conditions. Using a blend of manual therapies, exercises, and targeted interventions, she addresses jaw dysfunction, muscle tension, and associated headaches. Her comprehensive approach aims to restore proper jaw function, alleviate pain, and improve overall orofacial health.

Medication Management

Our team provides expert medication management for headaches, migraines, and TMD. We work closely with patients to find the most effective pharmacological treatments, which may include preventive medications, acute pain relievers, and drugs to address specific symptoms. Our approach emphasises minimising side effects while maximising pain relief and function.

Occipital Nerve Blocks

Occipital nerve blocks are a targeted treatment option for various types of headaches, particularly those originating from the back of the head and neck. Our specialists perform this minimally invasive procedure by injecting a combination of local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatory medication around the greater and lesser occipital nerves. This can provide rapid relief from pain and inflammation, often resulting in significant reduction of headache symptoms.

The procedure is particularly effective for occipital neuralgia, certain types of migraines, and cervicogenic headaches. Many patients experience immediate relief that can last for weeks to months, and repeated treatments can lead to longer-term benefits.

Nutrition & Dietetics

Our dietitians play a valuable role in managing headaches and migraines, for those whom dietary factors trigger flare-ups. They work with patients to identify potential food triggers, develop anti-inflammatory eating plans, and ensure proper hydration and nutrient intake. This nutritional approach can help reduce the frequency and severity of headaches for many individuals.

Manual Therapy

We offer various manual therapy techniques and pressure point release treatments to address muscle tension and joint dysfunction associated with headaches, migraines, and TMD. These hands-on approaches can help alleviate pain, improve circulation, and promote relaxation, often providing immediate relief and contributing to long-term management of symptoms.

Specialty Dentistry

While we don't have an in-house dentist, we recognise the crucial role dental care plays in managing TMD and certain types of headaches. We have established strong connections with experienced dental practitioners who specialise in these areas.

We can refer patients to these trusted professionals for specialised treatments such as custom-fitted dental splints, which can significantly alleviate TMD symptoms and related headaches. These dentists also offer Botox treatments for TMD and bruxism, providing an additional option for muscle relaxation and pain relief. For cases requiring more advanced intervention, we can connect patients with oral surgeons experienced in TMJ disorders.

Questions..?

Biio has answers

What Exactly is Orofacial Pain?

Orofacial pain refers to any discomfort or pain felt in the face, mouth, jaw, or neck.

This type of pain can be caused by a variety of conditions, including temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), nerve pain (such as trigeminal neuralgia), headaches, sleep issues and dental problems. It may range from mild discomfort to severe pain that affects daily activities and quality of life.

What Causes Headaches and Migraines?

Headaches and migraines can be triggered by a wide variety of factors. Common causes include stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), certain foods and additives, dehydration, and environmental factors such as bright lights or loud noises.

Migraines, which are intense and often debilitating headaches, can also have a genetic component, making some individuals more predisposed to experiencing them.

What Causes TMD?

TMD (temporomandibular disorders) are conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the muscles of mastication (chewing), and the nerves associated with chronic facial pain (the occipatal and trigimenal nerves).

Causes of TMD can include jaw injury, arthritis, excessive gum chewing, misalignment of the teeth or jaw, sleep disorders, and stress, which can lead to clenching or grinding of the teeth (bruxism).

Are Headaches and TMD Connected?

Yes, headaches and TMD can be interconnected. TMD can lead to muscle tension and strain in the jaw and neck areas, which can, in turn, trigger headaches. Conversely, individuals who suffer from chronic headaches or migraines may experience increased tension in their jaw and neck muscles, potentially exacerbating TMD symptoms.

What Treatments Are Available?

Treatment options for headaches, migraines, and TMD vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms. They may include medication management, physical therapy, stress reduction techniques, oral appliances (such as bite guards), and lifestyle modifications. In some cases, support from a specialist for more advanced treatments, such as Botox injections for chronic migraines or surgery for severe TMD, may be necessary.

Do Lifestyle Factors Influence Headaches or TMD?

Yes, lifestyle factors can significantly influence both headaches and TMD. Poor posture, inadequate sleep, high stress levels, poor diet, and dehydration can all contribute to the frequency and severity of headaches and TMD symptoms. Making positive changes in these areas can help manage and reduce symptoms.

Do You Treat Occipital and Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Yes, we treat conditions like occipital neuralgia and trigeminal neuralgia. These conditions involve nerve pain in the head and face, and treatment may include medication, nerve blocks, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Our specialised orofacial therapists and pain medicine specialists are equipped to assess and manage these conditions.

How Do I Get Started?

Getting started involves scheduling an initial assessment with one of our orofacial therapists. During this assessment, the therapist will evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and any contributing factors to develop a comprehensive care plan tailored to your needs. This may include referrals to other specialists as necessary. Our goal is to address the root causes of your pain and provide effective, holistic treatment options
