Leading the chronic pain care pathway at Biio is Dr. Olivia Ong. With a background in rehabilitation and specialist pain medicine, Dr. Ong brings over 15 years of clinical experience caring for people with persistent pain.
Her own journey is one of resilience and transformation; after a severe accident in 2008 left her with daunting prognoses, she embarked on a rigorous recovery, defying odds to walk and practice medicine again. This personal battle with pain and recovery not only deepened her understanding of the physical and emotional facets of chronic pain but also fueled her passion for supporting others through their healing journeys.
Specialist Pain Medicine is a comprehensive approach to diagnosing, treating, and managing chronic pain. Our multidisciplinary team employs advanced interventions, including medication, physical therapy, psychological support, and cutting-edge techniques like nerve blocks and spinal cord stimulation. We tailor treatments to each patient's unique needs, addressing both physical and emotional aspects of pain. Our goal is to alleviate suffering, enhance functionality, and improve overall quality of life for those with conditions such as chronic back pain, neuropathy, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).
Our experienced nurse practitioners, combines conventional medical approaches with evidence-based complementary therapies to address chronic pain holistically. This patient-centred approach considers the interconnections between physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors contributing to pain. Our nurse practitioners develop personalised treatment plans that may include hormone testing, nutritional counselling, mind-body techniques, and lifestyle modifications. By addressing the root causes of pain and promoting overall wellness, integrative medicine aims to enhance pain management, improve function, and boost quality of life for those living with chronic pain conditions.
Pain Psychology focuses on the mental and emotional aspects of chronic pain. Our psychologists help patients develop coping strategies, manage pain-related anxiety and depression, and improve quality of life. Using techniques like cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness, and relaxation training, we help patients change how they think about and respond to pain. This approach is particularly beneficial for those with long-term pain conditions or those struggling with the emotional toll of chronic pain.
Our specialised Pain Physiotherapists work with patients to improve physical function and manage chronic pain. They use a variety of techniques including targeted exercises, manual therapy, and education on body mechanics. This personalised approach aims to increase mobility, strength, and flexibility while reducing pain and preventing further injury. Pain physiotherapy not only focuses on physical healing but also integrates aspects of mental and emotional support, significantly enhancing overall wellbeing and quality of life.
Self-management skills empower individuals to effectively manage their chronic pain on a day-to-day basis. We teach practical strategies that allow patients to take control of their pain and improve their quality of life. These skills include pain education, goal setting, pacing techniques, stress management, sleep hygiene, mindfulness and relaxation practices, effective communication, medication management, lifestyle modifications, and problem-solving. By mastering these skills, patients can gain more control over their pain, reduce reliance on medical interventions, and improve their overall wellbeing.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a specialised cognitive therapy for treating chronic pain that focuses on retraining the brain's pain processing mechanisms. Developed by neuroscientist and psychologist Alan Gordon, PRT aims to help patients reinterpret pain signals, thereby reducing fear and anxiety associated with pain, while reducing pain intensity.
Combining education in pain neuroscience, mindfulness techniques, and cognitive strategies, PRT helps individuals break the cycle of chronic pain by addressing the brain's learned pain response and sensitisation.
Graded Motor Imagery is an innovative rehabilitation therapy used to treat complex pain conditions and improve motor function. It's primarily used for chronic pain, back pain, phantom limb pain, and conditions like Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an innovative auditory intervention designed to address chronic pain through modulation of the autonomic nervous system. Developed by renowned researcher Dr. Stephen Porges, SSP uses specially filtered music to stimulate the vagus nerve and promote a state of safety and relaxation.
In the context of pain management, SSP aims to reduce hypersensitivity and dysregulation often associated with chronic pain conditions. By enhancing vagal tone and improving the body's ability to self-regulate, SSP can help decrease pain perception, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being.
